Thousands of people on Monday gathered on the streets of Alanganallur town in Madurai, Tamil Nadu and protested against the ban on Jallikattu which is a well known ancient bull-taming sport in the state.
Men as well as women assembled in the town which is famous for conducting the controversial sport. Large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident during the mass protest.
In May 2014, the Supreme Court banned the conduct of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. The top court also said that bulls cannot be used as performing animals for Jallikattu events and also for the bullock cart races in the Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu or elsewhere in the country.
Though the apex court has banned the popular bull-taming sport, people have been demanding the government of India to take necessary legal steps to conduct the sport.
